Our first ever Quartz OA newsletter in which we are: (1) sharing our new website and white paper, (2) inviting you to join us on our adventure, (3) presenting one of our team members and (4) giving you a sneak peek into our plans!
Hi friends! 🙋♀️ We hope you’re doing fine.
We haven't been very active 'communication-wise' these past months but we've been working hard on our tech and learning a lot about how scholarly communication works and how we can help it work a little better 🤭
So, this month, we are excited to kick off the series of Quartz OA newsletters by sharing with you our new website and white paper, inviting you to join us on our adventure, presenting one of our team members and giving you a sneak peek into our plans!
First, we are happy to share with you our first website that will be growing and expanding to welcome our community of researchers, journals and institutions supporting fair open access. (Our designer is a bit ashamed of how it looks now, but really soon we will have the final version of it💕) We have also published our white paper outlining the challenges of scholarly publishing as we see them and proposing Quartz OA as a new avenue for transitioning to a fairer model. The white paper is available in pdf format here and in a more interactive format here. Feel free to check it out, to share it with your peers and to share with us any comments!
We invite you to join us on our adventure: help us build Quartz OA and make academic publishing fairer! There are so many ways you can participate - from commenting on our white paper to helping us develop the governance structure for Quartz OA coop - so do get in touch and let's build a better future for academic publishing together! (Also, check out this post for more ideas on how you could contribute).
Let us introduce ourselves
We are a small but really well working team so we have decided to invite you to our world and introduce all members. We are going to start from the newest. Evgeniya joined us last September, and we don't know how we were without her 😄
Evgeniya Lupova-Henry wears two hats of a Post-doc researcher and a Strategy and Research manager, working in parallel on several topics she is passionate about. In her academic research, she focuses on understanding the functioning of complex ‘meta-organisations’ or ‘organisations of organisations’ and their role as collective actors in sustainability transitions. These topics, however, are not the only ones driving Evgeniya’s academic interests. While doing her PhD at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, she kept wondering how the academic publishing system has ended up being so… well, you know… unfair and opaque, let’s put it that way. So, she decided to 'do something about it' and got in touch with us at Decentralised Academy to join us in building a fairer future for the academic publishing system. Now she helps us develop strategy, communications and partnerships. In her spare time, she enjoys street and landscape photography and trekking in remote corners of the world. Originally from Russia, Evgeniya now lives in The Hague, the Netherlands. You can reach her here!
🚀We are now working hard to launch a series of pilots with institutions and journals to test our microdonation technology. If you are a journal and are ready to take part in these - we look forward to hearing from you! If you are a librarian who wants to explore how Quartz OA can help you invest into fair OA - don't hold back either 😉
🤞We plan to register Quartz OA as a cooperative by the beginning of 2022 and are now working hard and getting into the details of it, looking how to organise governance and membership. We are also getting in touch with those who could be our founding members and advisors and could help us set the coop. If you think you are one of these beautiful people🧠 - we will be very excited to hear from you!
🥳In August, we'll be launching a series of crowdfunding campaigns and awards to celebrate diversity and equality in academia! We'll share more about that on Twitter and in the next newsletter 🤩
In the next episode...
This month we'll be intermittently on holidays but we'll come back strong in mid-August with a bunch of news and initiatives - so stay tuned!
